Frequently Asked Questions

How to care for your Cutting Board?

Wood cutting boards are easy to care for. The best way to clean your cutting board is to hand wash with dish soap under running water and towel dry. Wood cutting boards should always be left to dry vertically and away from any heat source (i.e. above a dishwasher or under a hot cabinet light). Using an oil with 100% Pure Tung periodically to maintain the appearance and protection will prolong the life and aesthetics of the cutting board. It may also need to be lightly sanded as new wood grain may rise and roughen. New studies have shown that bacteria live longer on plastic cutting boards vs. wood cutting boards. A sanitizing wash can be done simply with kosher salt and water paste, apply with a clean wash cloth standing for 30 minutes to over night and wash thoroughly. Baking soda can also be added. Do not use bleach. Since wood expands and contracts as it gains or loses moisture, it's important to take proper care of any wood cutting board. With proper care and storage your Brooks Woodworking board will be in your kitchen for decades to come.

What kind of oil should I put on my cutting board?

Brooks Woodworking Custom Wood Oil is a special blend of 100% pure Tung oil, Beeswax and Carnauba wax; all of which are FDA approved. Tung oil dries by oxygenation and will reach a minimum cure after 10-15 days and a full cure after 20-30 days. It is usually dry to the touch in 1 to 2 days and ready for use. Apply to a Brooks Woodworking Cutting Board which has been sanded, salt washed and left to dry for a day or 2. Wet the board liberally with very warm oil (microwave safe) and re apply as needed until the wood will no longer absorb the oil. Let stand for 30 minutes before reapplying. Wipe excess oil with a clean dry rag. Check periodically for pooling. Do not allow any excess oil to stand overnight or it may gum. Extra fine steel wool can be used between coats of new applications.

If you like to use this oil elsewhere test in a small area first. Previous wood treatments may react unfavorably. See our Pure Tung Oil link for more information.

Sand by hand with high quality paper in the direction of the grain. 180 to 320 grit.

Salt wash by making a paste using kosher salt and water. Scrub the paste onto the board with a rag and let stand for 30 minutes to overnight. Baking soda can also be used.

Pure Tung Oil is extracted from the nut of the Tung tree, also known as China wood oil. Tung oil comes from cold pressing of the seeds or nuts of the Tung tree. Tung trees mainly grow in the mountainous regions of china away from industrialization and pollution.
